Join us on the 4th of July weekend for our second drive-in worship service of the summer. A few reminders: The time has been shifted to 10AM because of the July heat. Our Sunday School classes will meet at 9AM. Please follow the health guidelines that we have all learned already especially social distancing and masks.Give people space. We want to care for and to protect each other. If you don’t feel well, it is better to stay at home and watch the worship service later in the day on our YouTube channel. If you want to hum along or sing quietly, please assess how close you are to others and wear your mask. If you think you are too close to others then you probably are. Communion will be provided in individual packets, but it is better to bring your own.You can stay in your car or sit outside in your own chair – whatever you feel comfortable doing.

A few special things about this weekend’s worship service: We continue in our Camp Christiime theme, and our Co-Pastor Ali Miguel will share a camp story called “The Palace Made By Music.” We will also be hearing about our new Peace Pole. and our Blessing Box has arrived.

A Note from Our New Co-Pastor:

Hello Church!

Many of you already know me, but for those of you who do not, my name is Ali Miguel and on July 1st, I officially began serving New Horizons Christian Church as one of your Co-Pastors.

As of right now, my husband Adrian and I and our four children currently live in Medina, Ohio. We are in the process of selling our home and looking for a new home closer to Akron. In between house hunting and moving projects, I am also taking classes at Phillips Theological Seminary. I am down to my last three classes, which means I will finish the PTS Ministry Training Program in December. My life is a busy life, but it is a beautiful kind of busy and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Serving in this new role as Co-Pastor of NHCC, is something I have been excited about since the day I first submitted my resume for consideration. I mean, who wouldn’t be excited to share life and the Good News of Jesus alongside such a wonderful, kind, compassionate, generous, and loving community of faith. And now that so many things have changed in our world, it sure seems like the world could use some new life, especially from a wonderful, kind, compassionate, generous, and loving Body of Christ such as ours. Being able to do new things together as a loving Community of Faith, the loving Body of Christ, that brings new life to the world, is very exciting and energizing to me. The possibilities are endless!

So, let our journey begin. May it be a walk of faith that makes us stronger, brings us closer, and equips us to do the good work in our neighborhoods, communities, and the world. May it be a journey that shares the love of God with all we meet through everything we do.

Go Team!

In grace and peace,

Ali Miguel

Drive-In Worship Service a Success

Drive-In Worship A big thanks to everyone who helped make our first drive in worship experiment a success. Including our worship leadership, about 60 people attended – some sitting in cars and some in chairs. We had a few glitches – namely the AM transmitter – but overall it was a great experience to worship together. Thanks especially to our worship band for all their work – Sam Kitzler, Jeremy Wolfe, Rob Wolfe, Tammy Keen, and Steve Stimler. It was great hearing them play, wasn’t it? And we honored our graduates as well – Brianna Allen, Cara McKeown, Gabriel Miguel, and Adam Bendel.

Thanks also to everyone who made sure to follow best practices to keep each other safe – social distancing, masks, and no singing.

A shout out to all who brought a food offering for our Blessing Box/Food Pantry.

Afterwards, a caravan of cars drove by the houses of Vi Christy and Carroll Candle. Thanks to Kim Stimler who organized that special part of the morning.

If you missed the service, a portion of it is on our YouTube Channel – thanks Adam.

Drive In Worship This Sunday at New Horizons Christian Church

Join us on Sunday June 21 for our first Drive In Worship Service at New Horizons Christian Church. The service will begin at 10:45AM, and you can participate in a variety of ways. You can remain in your car with the windows up and listen on your AM radio to the sound. You can remain in your car and open the windows. Or you can leave your car entirely and sit in the chair that you will bring. Do whatever feels safest to you. Please bring everything you will need including your own communion (though pre-filled individual communion will be available). If and when you are out of your car, we strongly encourage social distancing and mask wearing. The building will be open for restroom use only.

To keep the parking lot as open as possible, we ask that if you plan on sitting in a chair that your park you car on a side street or consider parking across the street in the former IGA lot. If parking in our lot, please enter by the Meade Avenue entrance. This set-up is similar what we have done at our Back to School carnivals.

We will honor our graduates and fathers on Sunday (Grads and Dads), but this service will be for everyone. Since this is our first attempt at Drive-In worship, we anticipate some glitches and we ask you to be patient. We hope to learn from this and have later outside services in July and August.

Please bring a non-perishable food item for out food pantry/blessing box.

The message will be “The Tower” which is part of our “You can’t go to Camp, but Camp can come to you” series.

Online Worship will not be available at 9AM as is has been for the past three months but will be on our YouTube channel on Sunday night.

Community Prayer Event After our Drive-In worship, we are offering everyone the opportunity to participate in a prayer exercise using the Ray Christy prayer cross that has become a fixture of our  Lenten season. We also hope to attract some of our neighbors.

Also on Sunday Our Friendship and Lord’s Workers classes will be meeting in the parking lot at 9:30

Coming attractions: Cara McKeown is having a graduation party on July 26th from 2:00-5:00pm at the Firestone VFW Pavilion (behind the building) at 690 W. Waterloo Rd., Akron, OH.  If you have any questions please call Fran at 330 801-2499.

Protest Update and More News from New Horizons Christian Church

Protest Update: I am really proud of the members of our church who showed up at the event at Kelvington’s on Wednesday afternoon to protest the racial intimidation incident. In all, we had about a dozen people there – many of whom passed out water and an occasional mask to the people who were in attendance. The event lasted about 2 1/2 hours and was peaceful. The scariest moment was when a man on a motorcycle drove through the crowd, but no one was hurt. The police chased him down and apprehended him. I was very appreciative of the Akron police who were able to create a protective bubble around the event and made sure that no one was injured. Their presence was reassuring.  (You can find pictures of the event on our Facebook page)

What happens next? Kelvington’s has been boarded up and it is unclear if and when it will be reopened. Charges have been filed against Mr. Kelvington related to firearms.

I would like our church to be a healing presence in our neighborhood, and I think we’ll be offering a spot on our church parking lot from 12-2 on Sunday June 21 after our drive-in service for anyone who wants to come from the neighborhood and pray. We will share more on that next week.

Coming Up this Weekend:

On Sunday June 14 at 9AM on our YouTube Channel we’ll be launching our summer theme connected to Camp Christian: “You may not be able to go to Camp, but Camp can come to you.” This Sunday our text will be Ephesians 2:11-22 and our message will be “The Seven Kingdoms and the Hidden Spring.” Since it is summertime, feel free to dress casually for worship.

Also on June 14, the Friendship Class and the Lord’s Workers Class will meet at 9:30AM in the church parking lot.

That afternoon the Sisters in Christ will meet in the Bane’s backyard, 86 W. Case Dr., Hudson, Ohio 44236. BYOE – Bring your own everything – chair, beverage, food. Time 5-7PM. If you have not done so already, please RSVP to Holly at 330.676.2862. or hharrisbane@gmail.com.

Meetings Next Week:

Our Elders will have a Zoom meeting on Tuesday the 16th at 7.

Bible Study: We have just started a new study of Ephesians and we meet on Wednesday evenings at 7PM. Let Pastor Jim know if you want to be prat of this, and he will send you log-in information.

Sunday June 21 at 10:45AM: Our first in-person worship gathering since March 8. For everyone’s safety we will meet outside in our parking lot. You can either stay in your car and listen to the sound on your AM radio or set up your own chair in the lot. Please practice social distancing. Mask wearing is highly recommended. We will have individual communion packets for people, but you are encouraged to bring your own. We will also have some activities for children. Since it is Fathers Day we will be lifting up Dads as well as Grads – those who have graduated in recent weeks. It will be a continuation of our Camp Christian summer theme. Bring a canned or non-perishable item to stock our blessing box and food pantry.

Safety is our #1 goal, and afterwards we will evaluate and make adjustments as needed. A recording of the service will be on our YouTube channel later that day.

A follow up to the Ali’s message on June 7: Ali mentioned resources available on our General church website for anti-racism and pro-reconciliation. Here is a link to some of these resources:
